Getting Started Guide 15 CHAPTER 2 Starting with Windows Even if you have Windows 95, 98 or NT installed on your computer, it is easy to install OpenLinux and still keep your Windows installation. Using your Open- Linux CD-ROM from within Windows, you can: Learn about OpenLinux in a familiar environment Prepare any additional items you need for installation (for example, some users may need to create an Installation diskette) Prepare a separate partition of your hard disk on which to install Open- Linux using a graphical tool called PartitionMagic, from PowerQuest Start the actual installation directly from your OpenLinux CD-ROM This chapter describes how to prepare for a Windows-based installation using the OpenLinux 2.3 “Windows Tools & Commercial Packages” CD-ROM. This results in a computer on which both OpenLinux and Windows can reside. CAUTION: OpenLinux is an operating system separate from Windows. Although you can launch the OpenLinux installa- tion from Windows, you cannot run Windows and OpenLinux at the same time. The installation program described in this section installs the PartitionMagic soft- ware on your Windows PC so you can create an OpenLinux partition. You can then learn about and launch the installation of OpenLinux within Windows.
